Sebastian Kent

Sebastian Kent

Project Manager / Marine Engineer

Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Mining Engineering ACSM

Sebastian joined Grit Engineering in January 2019. He has over 12 years experience in heavy industry, split between marine construction, mining and oil refining.

Post graduation, he commenced work as a Project Engineer on a variety of marine projects around the UK and Northern Europe. These included ocean outfalls, large and very large diameter reverse circulation drilling, offshore wind turbine foundation installations, and harbour developments amongst others.

In early 2010, Sebastian moved to the mining industry and gained a variety of experience in open cast mining and bulk earth moving both in Canada and New Zealand. He filled a variety of roles including: planning and scheduling, drill and blast, and project works. Returning to the marine construction industry in 2015, Sebastian provided Project Engineering, Project Management, Estimation and Development services; including on projects with Ports of Auckland.

Sebastian’s first big project at Grit was with Refining NZ, working with the Front End Engineering team and also providing technical support and marine operations advice for the Deeper Story dredging project. His experience in marine operations allowed for an in depth assessment of the proposed methods and equipment, and provided ‘fit for purpose’ solutions to effectively meet the needs of the client.

Across all his roles Sebastian has been involved in implementing rigorous Health and Safety systems. With his diverse background he brings excellent project planning, health and safety management and a diverse knowledge base and technical experience to the team, and drives a project to maximise safe production from your marine or earthmoving plant. Sebastian has the ability to quickly understand the specifics of scope even outside of his core knowledge area and adapt to new disciplines naturally.

In his spare time Sebastian likes hunting, fishing, hiking, camping and surfing. For Sebastian and his young family, making the move to Northland was an easy decision. They enjoy the superb lifestyle on offer, and getting involved in the local community. Always keen to help out, Sebastian is a member of Fire and Emergency New Zealand, as a recruit fire fighter at the Portland Volunteer Fire Brigade.

Sebastian has always been interested in how things work and is passionate about pushing boundaries with his engineering skills while keeping to strict Health & Safety guidelines.

What our clients say…

GRIT carried out condition and seismic assessments for WDC on two of our water reservoirs which are considered critical infrastructure. In producing maintenance and repair scopes and estimates they were practical and realistic. Their experience with existing structures and seismic assessment was clearly demonstrated and they truly added value.
