Alastair King GRIT Engineering

Alastair grew up in Northland and came into civil engineering the hard way - through a work-and-study pathway that took him south to Christchurch, where he balanced full-time work with study at the University of Canterbury. He experienced the Canterbury earthquakes firsthand, and when the rebuild felt too slow, he joined Fulton Hogan to get his hands dirty and contribute directly to the recovery. It set the tone for how he approaches every project: practically, pragmatically, and with both feet on the ground.

His career has spanned contracting, consulting, and client-side roles across New Zealand. In October 2025, after years of working alongside GRIT on projects across Northland, he made it official and joined the team full time. He brings with him a depth of on-site experience that bridges the gap between design intent and what actually works in the real world - and a healthy scepticism of solutions that look good on paper but fall apart on site.

Alastair lives by a motto his grandfather passed on: "If man made it, man can fix it."

Outside of work, you'll find him on or in the ocean, hunting and gathering, or teaching his kids to appreciate where food comes from.
